The idea for PIPA started several years ago out of a single goal....that of providing a social networking setting where Insurance Professionals of Portuguese descent could foster and develop professional relationships, discuss insurance topics and promote job opportunities within the industry. 

 

The name PIPA was arrived at out of a joke. Pipa means "wine barrel" in Portuguese and wine (mainly red) was one of the acceptable beverages at the initial luncheon meeting.

 

The first PIPA meeting took place in early 1996 at Adega Restaurant as one of the initial goals was for meeting/luncheons to take place at Portuguese restaurants in the Toronto area. The agenda at the first meeting was simple - to introduce the idea for PIPA’s existence. 

 

The attendance at the first meeting was 14 people and everyone wanted to promote this new Association. PIPA’s main goal continues to be the quest of obtaining support for PIPA’s worthwhile causes.

 

The present membership/supporters list is in excess of 75 and is mainly made up of insurance professionals in the P&C field (Property & Casualty) but those professionals in the health, life & benefits insurance industry are welcome.

 

PIPA's members include senior insurance people as well as new entrants into the business and come from the various regions of Portugal including the Azores & Madeira.

Non Portuguese Insurance Professionals are welcome to become Association members and attend all of its functions.
